François Auguste René Rodin (/ roʊˈdæn /; [1] French: [fʁɑ̃swa oɡyst (ə) ʁəne ʁɔdɛ̃]; 12 November – 17 November ) was a French sculptor [2] generally considered the founder of modern sculpture. [3] He was schooled traditionally and took a craftsman-like approach to his work. Rodin possessed a unique ability to model a complex, turbulent, and deeply pocketed surface. At the beginning of the century, a gay Sussex aesthete, E P Warren, commissioned Rodin to produce a version of his famous statue. In , he offered it to the town of Lewes for public display.
