How come I often get asked if I'm gay as a straight male?

Why do colleges ask sexual orientation?
Since I started, many students have speculated about my sexuality, asking me if I'm gay. While I am in fact gay, I am not ready to be out to the students at my school just yet because I have PTSD from facing discrimination at my last school after parents and students outed me, which was a religious private voucher school.
