They stay in that place where gay = "ew" and that's their first and last thought on the matter. So when they encounter a gay person in the real world, they feel grossed out (because of all those associations) and they want to "change the channel" to get away from the gross feeling. Usually it comes down to tone. If “that’s gay” is used in a way that implies something is bad, then it would be bad to say that. But if it’s used in a way that doesn’t imply homophobia and instead just describing a naturally queer thing, then I personally don’t have an issue with it. .

Being disgusted verse acting on it imo is the deal breaker for ya. You are in the clear to find same sex sex gross. Just as a gay guy is okay to think a vagina is gross.
