How Invincible's TV Show Fails William Clockwell & LGBTQ Fans
Sorry if the title is a bit out there, but Im just wondering if william is gay in the comics also or if thats just unique to the prime series since there hasn't been anything I've seen that points to that while reading the first compendium. Going through Robert Kirkman, Ryan Ottley and Cory Walker's original Invincible series can, almost two decades later, be awkward at times. A lot of the language characters use is very much of its time, with teenagers talking in ways that can come off as homophobic.
Is william in the comics straight or gay?
For example, when Mark takes William flying for the first time, he remarks, "This is so gay." (Atom Eve later says the same thing while taking William, whom she is dating at the time, flying). At one point, Mark also catches William wearing his costume and calls it "Gayyyyyyyyy.". I don't like William, and before anybody gets their pitchforks out, no, it's not because he's gay - although how that manifests in his personality and behaviour towards others irks me. William is perceived as “straight” by mark and the readers vicariously at the beginning. It’s a great way of showing that friends aren’t always ready to share every aspect of themselves, some people don’t even know that they’re gay until later in their own lives. . Invincible

William's sexuality isn't a topic of discussion, and he quickly falls into the "gay best friend" trope, which unfortunately doesn't leave room for much character development. The focus is rather on Mark’s romantic life, as he has crushes on two different girls, and William acts as his hype man. .

For a modern show it makes more sense for William to not be as affected by the fact that he's gay so it's more realistic in a sense. .
