Ippo's main goals in life are finding out what it means to be strong, and touching Miyata's hair. Ippo first met Miyata at Kamogawa boxing gym, where they sparred to evaluate the former's ability. Let’s contrast with the scene when they ”joke” about Ippo being gay due to his intense feelings towards Miyata, that actually do seem to border on a crush. While they are mostly ”joking”, as they don’t really believe he is gay, everyone backs away from him quickly, as if his touch is suddenly ”contaminated”. Ever since the death of Ippo's father, Hiroko has been the only parental figure in his life. Ippo deeply loves her.

Ichirō Miyata (宮田 一郎, Miyata Ichirō) is a featherweight professional boxer, the OPBF featherweight champion, and Ippo Makunouchi's idol and eternal rival. Miyata is a very skilled out-boxer with a cool demeanour that specialises in counter punches. He is considered by many to be a boxing prodigy, he uses the same boxing style as his father. I know this is a joke, but sometimes it really feels like it's the other way around. Ippo obviously idolises Miyata, placing their potential match as a pinnacle of his career, but Miyata seems like he lost his life's purpose after Ippo retired. Which is weird, since unlike Ippo, he's had a clear vision for what his career will be. .
