Apart from that u/chubby_hugger said below, publishers also tend to shoehorn female authors into the YA category. You see this a lot with fantasy - most fantasy books written by women seem to be filed under YA, and fantasy books by men seem to be filed under Adult, at least in trad pub. Not his mixed-race identity, and especially not his developing gender identity.
