When this subject arises, many people I know have a visceral or condescending reaction scoffing, chuckling, or eye rolling , so I want to help shed some light on why a gay pride parade feels necessary, maybe even essential, to the LGBT community.

After I posted this week’s video about how being gay isn’t all about sex, I got a lot of great comments, one of them from someone who said, simply, “Apparently you have never been to a pride parade.” Which is a fair point to raise. If being gay isn’t about sex, why do we so frequently associate sexual images with Pride events?. The concept began with the Stonewall riots in and continued with Pride marches, which spread across the USA. Over the past decade, UK schools have increasingly been encouraged to hold their own Pride events to encourage pupils to celebrate the ever growing range of sexual and gender identities they are told they can choose from.
