Currently 33 of the 50 countries and the 8 dependent territories in Europe recognise some type of same-sex union, among them most members of the European Union (24/27). Nearly 43% of the European population lives in jurisdictions where same-sex marriage is legal. Until homosexuality was punishable in Austria and until there were still minimum age limits for homosexual relationships in the Austrian penal code different from heterosexual relationships. The code allowed heterosexual partnerships to start at the age of 14, however, homosexual relationships were only considered legal from the age of 18 onwards.
