Mass Effect romances, by the numbers
Kaidan is just a regular guy that happens to like other guys, he isnt some over the top gay stereotype who's entire character and personality revolve around being gay/bi and thats fantastic, his sexuality is a minor part of who he is just like all the straight characters. Doing so was a reward in and of itself, but also a reminder of just how far behind seemingly progressive visions of our future can be sometimes. While Mass Effect has been lauded in the past for its romantic character arcs, and in particular its allowance for female Commander Shepards to pursue multiple female-coded partners across the series—the original trilogy in particular—it took much longer to embrace relationship options for queer male players who wanted to see themselves in their space action hero.
Gay Kaiden really effected me
Gay males were not presented with the opportunity for a same-sex romance until Mass Effect 3, when shipmate Kaidan Alenko (above) was made available alongside Alliance pilot Steve Cortez (below). Gay female relationships have been possible since the original Mass Effect and bisexual squadmate, Liara T’Soni. I always made my Commander Shepard black and, prior to the release of Mass Effect 3 , female. But when Bioware gave you the ability to play a queer male Shepard in , my perspective on gaming had changed. LGBT In Mass Effect
It just implies gay/bi people LOVE ALL MEN. Kaidan isn't attracted to specifically a biotic paragon Shepard (who would share his ideals and problems with biotics), he's just attracted to any Shepard. It implies gay/bi men will be attracted to any type of man just to get sex/a relationship. This is why I think the romances in DA:O are handled. Kaiden has to be bi, right? You can romance him from both sexes? 
Why did BioWare decide to make Kaidan bisexual in ME3
For Mass Effect 3 on the Xbox , a GameFAQs message board topic titled "What was the point in making kaiden gay?" - Page 3. I think that Cortez's character was the best out of them, he certainly felt the most sympathetic. Traynor is a bit of a miss.
Can male Sheppard romance Liara (1), Miranda (2), and Kaiden
Kaidan is perfectly romancable with a male Shepard in ME3 without any mods. Been that way since ME3 originally came out. Cortez is the gay romance because you can only romance him with a male Shep, Kaidan isn't technically a " gay " romance cause you can romance him with both male and female. Also the way Cortez hooked up with Shepard as soon as he had put Robert’s picture on the memorial wall really bugged me, it was waaay too fast. I love Kaidan’s romance arc because it was never about him being the “gay or bisexual” character, it just happened and felt like a totally natural progression. . 
What was the point in making kaiden gay?
Does anyone else wonder about this? I absolutely adore Kaidan being bisexual but it’s really interesting to me how they specifically made Kaidan available for Male Shepard to romance in M3 but didn’t make Ashley available for FemShep. I know back when Mass Effect 2 came out a lot of fans complained about the lack of queer romance in the games, which I think is why BioWare decided to add. .
ME3
The only problem I think happened was Kaidan being shoehorned into being bisexual in ME3. He was clearly only available to a female Shepard in ME1, but heading into ME3 I think they just needed more male romances for male Shepard since only 1 existed whereas female Shepard had probably 4 female (full and soft) romances that could be pursued. .
