Can anyone explain the phone call scene between Ennis (ledger) and Lureen (Hathaway) after Ennis learns about Jack's (Gyllenhaal) death? Was the death by blown tire a lie? Was the shots of his death actual event or Ennis's imagination? Why did Lureen get emotional at the end? Did she know Jack's secret from the beginning or just realised at that moment? Very intriguing scene I couldn't interpret. While "Brokeback Mountain" would meet critical acclaim — even earning Lee the Academy Award for Best Director — the content was, of course, not everybody's cup of tea. The film would also receive backlash from countless American conservative pundits , and its global reception was also hit-or-miss, with countries around the world restricting showings or DVD distribution, censoring the more intimate scenes, or even banning it outright.

Brokeback Mountain is so memorable because of the uncertainty of its ending, where Jack's death is uncontested but its cause remains up to interpretation. Brokeback Mountain should be renamed Heartbroke Mountain after its heart wrenching ending. Jack realizes that he and Ennis will never be together, because Ennis is too afraid to live openly.

Since Jack had been talking to his parents about making plans to leave his wife and bring "some ranch neighbor of his" with him up to his parents' place, I have to assume she at least by now knows about Jack's being gay. .
