Happy Together (Chinese: 春光乍洩) is a Hong Kong romantic drama film written-directed by Wong Kar-wai and starring Leslie Cheung and Tony Leung Chiu-wai as a turbulent couple. The English title is inspired by the Turtles ' song, which is covered by Danny Chung on the soundtrack. The Chinese title (previously used for Michelangelo Antonioni 's Blowup) is an idiomatic expression. Following the on-again, off-again relationship between Lai Yiu-Fai and Ho Po-Wing, the film starts with the couple on a trip to Argentina hoping to see the Iguazu Falls, but instead finds them lost in the middle of the desert, out of money and eventually breaking up. As the weeks go by, Lai starts working in a jazz bar to save enough money to fly home to Hong Kong, whereas Ho prefers to party and spends his nights in the town with different men.

A couple take a trip to Argentina but both men find their lives drifting apart in opposite directions. My formal education in film began 13 years ago with a Cinema screening of In the Mood for Love , and at the risk of sounding hyperbolic, it changed the way I saw movies. But, for whatever reason, Happy Together always remained a movie-blindspot of mine — until now, that is.

Review and Summary
It wasn’t long before I plowed through other movies in Wong Kar-wai’s filmography, devouring Chungking Express, , and Fallen Angels before my first year of undergrad was over. From there, I made my way through Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung’s works. Such interpretations of postcolonial texts demand a more nuanced understanding of the specific varied forms of inequality that result from colonial violence, and these interpretations require attention to the differences in hegemonic colonialism as it operates in each individual territory. In , Hong Kong, which had been a colony of the British Empire for years, was reincorporated into China.

I say this with several of other Wong Kar-wai’s most famous movies from the nineties: there isn’t a lot of action going on in the movie itself, but there’s loaded subtext in his imagery and.
