Any individual, regardless of gender or sexual orientation, who has had new or multiple sexual partners in the last three months, and also had anal sex in that timeframe, will be asked to wait three months to donate blood from last anal sex contact. With the updated guidelines, most gay and bisexual men who are in a monogamous relationship with a man will no longer have to refrain from sex in order to donate blood. While the FDA rules for blood donation were revised twice in the last decade, one group — men who have sex with men MSM — continued to be turned away from donating. Now new, evidence-based FDA rules embraced by the American Red Cross will focus on individual risk rather than groupwide restrictions.
FDA relaxes blood donation guidelines for gay and bisexual
Donors who have not had new or multiple sexual partners, and anal sex in the past three months, may be eligible to donate, provided all other eligibility criteria are met. Donors who have had new or multiple sexual partners without anal sex may be eligible to donate provided all other eligibility criteria are met. Men who have sex with men and who have had the same partner for 3 months or more and meet our other eligibility criteria are able to give blood.
