This tune was included in J. Scott Skinner’s concert set romantically entitled "Spey’s Fury’s” and was composed in by the great strathspey artist The original title was “The Gordon Highlanders March” but came to be called “The Gay Gordons” through association with the famous Scottish country dance. So I turn to you, my fine, dedicated dancers. First off, here are the dance instructions as I have found them so far: As a couple, in a kind of "hands up" promenade position, walk forward 4 steps, pivot as a couple degrees and walk backward 4 steps line of direction remains the same Repeat Walk forward, while the gent twirls the lady under his arm polka What I'm missing is the traditional tune for this dance, and the timing. It takes a "half-length" tune (16 bar), and I've heard people play various things for it ("Scotland the Brave" is a common choice). The Gay Gordons is a Scottish Country Dance, of uncertain origin and very popular during ceilidhs: it can be danced with some marchs or jigs and has been also associated with Skinner's tune. This one has been renamed by the dance's name. The word “Gay” means “handsome” here, as well as the Scottish outfit and/or the one who wears it. .
