By the time I got to this scene of “This Close,” which appears in the series’ final episode (streaming today), I was feeling a bit like Kate in that moment. I’m gay and live with significant hearing loss. I began this assignment to watch the program, heralded as the first TV show helmed by and starring people who are Deaf, one of them gay, impressed that anyone had been willing to. Universal and relatable themes of love and friendship are touched on throughout the half-hour episodes. The ensemble cast includes Cheryl Hines as Kate's boss and Marlee Matlin as Michael's mother , a recovering alcoholic trying to reconnect with her son.

“This Close,” which debuted on Valentine’s Day, began its life in as a comic series called “ Fridays,” in which Feldman and Stern played less-developed versions of Michael and Kate. A second, five-episode version of the show called “ The Chances ” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. I began this assignment to watch the program, heralded as the first TV show helmed by and starring people who are Deaf, one of them gay, impressed that anyone had been willing to bankroll and present something this revolutionary. After a lifetime of failing to see characters like me on screen or stage, I felt grateful for whatever strangely niche parfait the world of Peak TV now had on offer.
