The episode's title is a play on the Civil War novel The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane. Matt and Trey noticed people take American Civil War reenactments very seriously, events they personally feel indifferent towards. When assuming the role of the drummer boy for the reenactment, rather than beat a proper marching rhythm like he's supposed to, Cartman instead wails maniacally on the instrument while screaming like a rock star Cartman : Hey, you can't just 'hit' a drum, you have to beat the shit out of it.
