The Importance of Gay Characters in Shadowhunters

Alec Lightwood
GAY COUPLE STORYLINE: Alec Lightwood (Matthew Daddario) is a serious and no-nonsense Shadowhunter, the older brother of Isabelle (Emeraude Topia) and Max (Jack Fulton) and the adoptive brother and Parabatai (a pair of Nephilim warriors) of Jace (Dominic Sherwood). Since its inception, the Shojo manga series, Shadowhunters, has been praised for its inclusiveness, featuring a diverse array of characters that reflect the real world. This includes gay characters , which are an important part of the series. 
LGBT+ characters
The Shadowhunters predominately consider themselves as superior due to their angel blood, while they consider Downworlders inferior due to their demon blood. Along the same lines, Nephilim are very strict and unaccepting of any deviations from the “mythical norm”, including identifying as anything other than heterosexual. He is the husband of Magnus Bane , is the adoptive father of Rafael and Max Lightwood-Bane , and is the older brother of Isabelle and Max , as well as the adoptive brother and parabatai of Jace Herondale. Alec is one of the few openly gay Shadowhunters.

However, one thing stands out to me when TLH is compared to the other series. We have Anna, Matthew, Alastair, Charles and Thomas as queer main characters. More queer main characters than in the other series (of course depending on who you actually consider a main character in every series). Actually a very great thing. The series aired in North America on Freeform from January 12, — May 6, and is now available globally on Netflix. The series was made into 55 episodes in 3 seasons, and each episode runs for nearly 42 minutes.

But the amount of ‘acceptance’ these gay characters have are literally all different each series and era. Let me explain. We got The Last Hours trilogy set in , which I think we can hopefully all agree have the most diverse characters compared to Cassandra’s other shadowhunter chronicles. .
