Emil's sexuality is brought to the forefront in Nier Replicant - and that matters. While the NieR series has plenty of fame nowadays thanks to NieR: Automata, the first entry was more of a small cult classic. While the original NieR received criticism for its gameplay, it was known among fans for its riveting music and emotional story.

But as a gay character, the nuance the game treats him with is beautiful. This care is demonstrated again when Nier is gathering pieces of a key to access the Shadowlord’s Castle. It was a scene in the original that you couldn’t infer anything from, even with knowledge of Emil’s sexuality. I remember feeling a special kind of joy when the enhanced rerelease of the original NieR was announced. NieR was a much more aggressive and angry game, but still beautiful in ways that Automata was.

NieR Automata is a queer game by itself, but the original isn't lacking in that department either. Check out Natalie Flores' words on NieR's LGBT history. In the first release, queer aspects of its many characters were pushed to the side, reworded in the English translation to become little more than a slight reference, or in some cases, they were removed altogether. Emil, on the other hand, is a very different story.

Gay???
In various interviews and, most notably, in the concept art book Grimoire NieR, Yoko Taro acknowledges and confirms that everyone’s favourite sphere-headed skeleton Emil is canonically gay and harbours romantic feelings for the game’s protagonist (which I assure you is much less creepy when you keep in mind that in the original version of the game, Nier is a teenage boy). .
