The Netflix series My Block follows the life of Jamal Turner, a high schooler living in South Central Los Angeles. Though the show never explicitly states whether or not Jamal is gay, there are several moments throughout the series that suggest he may be. The show follows an all-POC friend group including characters of Black, Latinx, and Asian ethnicities as they navigate high school, relationships, struggles at home, and a treasure hunt. While it had its fair share of cringy moments, the show was funny and interesting enough for me to watch the first three seasons, so when Netflix released a spin-off that included queer representation, I knew I had to watch it. On My Block is an American teen comedy-drama television series, created by Lauren Iungerich, Eddie Gonzalez, and Jeremy Haft. [1][2] Set in the fictional Los Angeles neighborhood Freeridge, it revolves four teenagers who find their friendship tested upon entering high school. Jamal is a quirky and loud boy and he is very funny. He can't keep a secret, hates football and doesn't want to disappoint his parents.

I don’t think that’s what they’re going for, realistically, but also as a gay fan of the show I really wish they’d have included a gay character. I’d be absolutely thrilled if Ruby or Jamal came out in the next season, or even if they added a recurring gay character—anything at all. .
