Objectification theory (Fredrickson & Roberts, ) posits that individuals whose bodies are repeatedly judged as objects by others internalize these messages and consequently view their own bodies as objects. Self-objectification increases body dissatisfaction, which compromises psychological well-being (Wiseman & Moradi, ). Gay men may be more likely to have objectifying experiences. Objectification Theory proposes that membership in sexually objectifying Western societies gradually socializes women to adopt an observer's perspective on their physical self.
