The Hats Figawi hats, which debuted in the late s, are highly prized accessories given only to the sailors in the race. Mount Gay embroiders hats specifically for each of their sponsored regattas worldwide—including Figawi. No more than three are distributed to each finishing team, so veteran sailors see them as badges of honor. It's no small feat, and yet, as any Figawi racer will tell you, after 50 years of practice, this event is run like a well-oiled machine. So, how did Figawi Race Weekend come into existence?

Gay hats emblazoned with the Figawi Race logo and year; extremely valuable bargaining chips during the weekend, and later instantly recognizable from Chatham to Beacon Hill to Wall Street. Figawi Race Weekend is recognized as a top sailing event not only on the east coast but nationally as well as internationally. Traditionally held over Memorial Day Weekend, the event marks the beginning of the summer season.

Through these events, we make a difference by giving proceeds to a variety of causes including veterans, first responders, and youth organizations. Originally billed as a fun race across Nantucket Sound over Memorial Day weekend, Figawi grew by leaps and bounds during the 70s—so much so that a lay day was added in along with a race back to Hyannis, as the race committee, now formerly organized, turned the Figawi from a one day race into a three day weekend event. And though the race is competitive, the emphasis on this event has always been about friendly camaraderie and the festivities following the race.
