Both gay and queer are often used as self-identifying terms. The term "gay" typically refers to individuals who are attracted to people of the same sex, specifically men attracted to men or women attracted to women. It has been widely used for many years and is more commonly understood by the general public. 
Queer vs. Gay
Queer vs. Gay “Gay” typically refers to someone who is attracted to people of the same gender. “Queer,” on the other hand, is more of an umbrella term for members of the LGBTQ community, including bisexual, transgender, and nonbinary people. The term used to be a slur, but many younger LGBTQ people have reclaimed it in a positive way. Historically, it has been most frequently associated with men who are attracted to other men, but it can also apply to women. The term gay is straightforward and widely understood, making it a popular choice for individuals who want to clearly express their sexual orientation.
Difference Between Queer And Gay
To some people, the terms gay and queer are one and the same, but that’s not exactly the case. Here, we explain the difference. For the remainder of this chapter, references to gay, lesbian and bisexual adults exclude those who are transgender. Transgender adults are of any sexual orientation.
