Tom is the youngest son of Sam and Liza Hamilton. He is thoughtful and introverted, and deeply dependent on his father’s guidance and wisdom. When Sam dies, Tom is left in charge of the ranch, and loneliness disturbs his mind and nearly drives him crazy. Tom eventually kills himself after he accidentally poisons his sister Dessie with incorrect medicine for a stomachache. Cyrus is the stern father of Adam and Charles. Will was completely against Dessie’s return to the ranch; Tom and Dessie’s behaviour on the ranch is more similar to behaviour of a couple, if you disregard the fact that they are brother and sister. What are peoples' thoughts on Tom and Dessie Hamilton's relationship? I've recently finished reading East of Eden and despite these two characters only making a brief appearance in the novel, they made a real impact on me. Analysis Tom Hamilton is an explosion of light, joy, and creativity, according to his late father and according to Dessie, but he is unable to see it.
