A brief history of homophobia in Dewey decimal classification

The Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) (pronounced / ˈduː.iː / DOO-ee) colloquially known as the Dewey Decimal System, is a proprietary library classification system which allows new books to be added to a library in their appropriate location based on subject. This paper was originally submitted to Prof. It is generally understood that the structure and content of the Dewey Decimal Classification scheme reflect and reveal the deep biases and prejudices held not only by Melvil Dewey himself, but by the society in which he lived and thought.

Rainbow History Project

Hi! I have watched a few seasons of MTT a while ago, and recently watched the Netflix docuseries thing. I've noticed the complete lack of lgbt+ people involved in the organisation: specifically, the lack of lesbians. While you see a few (who I assume to be) gay men working as hairstylists/makeup artists/etc in affilliation with DCC, I have never seen or heard of a lesbian DCC except Leslie. In the DC Universe, several characters identify as queer. Unfortunately explicit queer representation is relatively new to comics due to homophobic censorship--Until the s, the Comics Code Authority explicitly forbade the appearances of comic characters being depicted as queer.

Naming the Love That Dare Not Speak Its Name

But people are complicated and societies evolve, so since that time it has come to be acknowledged that some characters are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. The Comics Code Authority explicitly forbade depiction of homosexuality until , influenced by Fredric Wertham's. .

LGBT

Nellie's, one of the few notable gay bars to open since , are attended by straight people and many bars without the intention of being a gay bar welcome and celebrate their LGBT community.
