BEAR Magazine is a periodical geared toward gay and bisexual men who are or admire "bears", stocky or heavyset men with facial and/or body hair. It was initially published in San Francisco, California, in by Richard Bulger and his partner Chris Nelson and marketed to the bear community within the larger LGBT community. The original BEAR Magazine is now a lifesyle publication for gay men! Every issue of BEAR brings a crisp, modern look with fresh editorial content featuring provocative images from the best photographers of bear-men in the world; cultural features blended with humor and informative articles on today's varied interests, politics and fashion. A celebration of unshaven, unapologetic masculinity. And while the magazine did not create bear culture, it certainly helped popularize it with erotic photos, stories and classified ads, all centered around bears. From its humble beginnings as a photocopied flyer BEAR eventually became a big glossy magazine with worldwide distribution until when its publisher Brush Creek Media was forced to close its doors by the IRS.

With his connection to gay biker culture and proximity to the Lone Star Saloon a gay bar credited with the inception of the San Francisco Bear Community , Bulger sought to partake in the growing success of zine desktop underground publication taking hold in San Francisco. However, "Bart Thomas" was a pseudonym Bulger chose for himself "bart" being the German word for "beard" in the earliest days of the project. BEAR Magazine
