Fanfiction and LGBT+ Representation

Fanfic in general is pretty LGBTQ heavy compared to the general media landscape, and that's mostly because mainstream media is so heteronormative. As to why AO3 is so reflective of this, it's because it's allowed. The OTW is a fan-run nonprofit dedicated to the preservation of fanworks. We're sustained entirely by donations from our users!

The Archive of Our Own (AO3) is a noncommercial and nonprofit central hosting site for transformative fanworks such as fanfiction, fanart, fan videos and podfic. The Archive is a wholly fan-created and fan-run space, where fannish creativity can benefit from the OTW’s advocacy in articulating the case for its legality and social value. This year, Archive of Our Own AO3 , an online fanfiction archive and network, won a Hugo award for Best Related Work, an award never before given to a website or unpublished work. For fans of literature, the significance of this is astounding: Hugo Awards have almost always been given to notable literary or dramatic works, typically in the tradition of print media.
