A Gay Man's Appalachian Trail Journey (Fall 2001)

Currently a gay male SOBO hiker. I kinda wanted to make a point of being visibly queer on trail, for a variety of personal reasons. I have had mostly positive experiences so far. I have found that you can generally expect good things out of humanity on the trail. People tend to be more moderately minded and good willed towards each other than the modern Internet can make things feel at times. Impact on the LGBTQ Community

Brenner went on to become an activist for LGBTQ rights. She has written a book, Eight Bullets: One Woman's Story of Surviving Anti-Gay Violence, and helped create a short film documenting her experience, In the Hollow.
