Outside Saticoy Elementary School in North Hollywood, parents protesting a Pride Day assembly clashed with police and counterprotesters supporting LGBTQ+ rights and education. More than a hundred protesters and counter-protesters stood on opposite sides of a normally quiet suburban Los Angeles street on Friday. The two groups had come for one reason: the local primary school was hosting a Pride Month event.

Dozens of high school students walked out of Great Oak High School in Temecula, protesting recent school board actions that protesters say target the LGBTQ community. Los Angeles police diverted the marchers around the line when a few unidentified people threw punches. Throughout the morning, police tried to separate the two sides as tensions mounted.

A counter-demonstration is underway at Roosevelt High School in southeast Fresno, where a designated hate group announced plans to protest on Monday. Tensions escalated over the weekend of May 22 when an unknown assailant broke into the school and burned a small LGBT pride flag that a Saticoy teacher had placed in a flower pot. The church is designated as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center and is known for its anti-gay beliefs. Balloons of every color of the rainbow lined the fence of Roosevelt High, though the reason they're here wasn't intended it be a celebration.
