Pride Comes From Choosing to Embrace Your Truth
CMV: Being gay is nothing to be proud of, because it isn't an achievement. Pride in being gay is as meaningful as pride in your place of birth. Gay pride tribalizes the gay community and creates stereotypes against them, harming LGBT individuals who do not participate in the pride culture. Each June, we gather in celebration. We dress in color, dance in the streets, and hold one another close. )
What if I Don’t Feel Pride as a Gay Man?
In the context of LGBTQ culture, LGBTQ pride (also known as queer pride, gay pride and other variants [a]) [5] is the promotion of the rights, self-affirmation, dignity, equality, and increased visibility of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) people as a social group. Pride, as opposed to shame and social stigma, is the predominant outlook that bolsters most LGBTQ rights. One of the findings from these research interviews was that when some participants felt anxious or fearful about holding hands in public, they also reported feeling disappointed, sad, or ashamed about their fear or anxiety. If you think about the broader North American ideal of being happy as much as possible, it makes sense that some of the participants would report disappointment, sadness and shame about their fear or anxiety.

The journey to discovering and embracing one’s gay identity is deeply personal and transformative, especially for gay men. It’s a process that often involves self-reflection, overcoming societal expectations, and navigating a world that typically imposes heteronormative standards. For many gay men, coming to terms with their sexuality can be both a challenge and a triumph - an act of self. Pride can also appear as false humility—avoiding attention, downplaying your strengths, or deflecting compliments—not because you’re truly humble, but because you fear being seen as prideful.
