Why are boy bands so straight? For a music genre that is constantly taunted as gay, the lack of queer representation is both confounding and indicative of heteronormativity’s role in popular culture. Historically, boy bands have filled traditional gender roles, using their songs and stage presence to woo young women. But they need not woo. Ever since the mids, when record execs and producers realized you can copy the Jackson 5 and New Edition blueprint and sell a lot of music-related products to teens, the boy band has become a recurring trend every decade. Now there is a new boy band on the scene looking to break that mold: All five members are openly gay.

Kpop boy group idols won’t sing about that stuff as it’s verboten to the female fanbase, so there’s not really much subject matter or themes that men enjoy that are prevalent in that space. Just a personal theory. Outside of pop music young men tend to like angry music, intense music - K-pop doesn’t really offer much in that space either. .
