Since joining BIG in as Chief Financial Officer, overseeing the development of the organization and its strategic priorities, Sheela has transformed BIG from Bjarke Ingels’ Danish architectural firm into an internationally acclaimed company led by design, community and innovation. When invited to design the Serpentine Pavilion, BIG decided to work with one of the most basic elements of architecture: the brick wall. Rather than clay bricks or stone blocks — the wall is erected from extruded fiberglass frames stacked on top of each other.

At the foot of BIG HQ, BIG’s Landscape team has transformed a former parking area into a 1, m2 public park and promenade, inspired by the sandy beaches and the coastal forests of Denmark. The program, however, is two thirds parking and one third living. When asked to design an apartment block next to a parking garage, BIG saw an opportunity to explore a new form of symbiotic urbanism.

The Mountain is a hybrid combining the splendors of a suburban lifestyle: a house with a big garden where children can play, with the metropolitan qualities of a penthouse view and a dense urban location. All t hree buildings are constructed as lightweight canopy structures optimized for interior daylight, views, collaboration, and activities. Team spaces are on the upper level and gathering spaces are below, separating focus and collaborative areas while still providing easy access to both. Serpentine Pavilion
