In the episode, Pierce decides to market Hawthorne Wipes to the gay community, only to be stopped by his skeptic father. Now a silly one! Pierce, initially annoyed to find that Hawthorne Wipes have become iconic in the gay community, embraces said community when he learns how much value they've brought to the business. Advanced Gay
The group is initially shocked until Pierce explains that Hawthorne Wipes sales have increased due to support by the gay demographic. He plans to market a new line of wipes specifically for them called "Hawthorne Pride Wipes". Unfortunately, the less wacky episodes are also where the show has to find its emotional resonance. Then in steps his father to put a stop to things.

He's just a somewhat wholesome and culturally accessible gay person who Shirley can appreciate as a public figure.
