As someone who served in the UMC for 17 years, nearly a decade of those in one of the largest churches in the country—it's about damn time! Traveling this country and engaging thousands of Christians every month, I encounter local faith communities both inside and outside the United Methodist Church, who claim to be LGBTQ-affirming or LGBTQ-inclusive but who want to do so with all sorts of caveats or conditions in place.

"Whether you think homosexuality is a sin or not or wherever you find yourself theologically, I think it’s about, basically, about human decency – how are we treating people?" Pavlovitz said he has talked with so many gay Christians who say they want to be part of the church but feel abandoned. The recent story about Carrie Underwood and Jen Hatmaker affirming homosexual behavior has my head spinning. Admittedly, my emotions range freely between confusion and sorrow when I observe the way so many professing believers treat those caught up in the sin of homosexuality.

Do you mean gender identity?

When you use the Bible to try and make the blanket statement that “homosexuality is a sin,” what you’re really doing without realizing it is reducing all LGBTQ people down to a sex act, as if that alone defines identity and sexuality. You’re also denying them any capacity to feel real love or show true affection toward someone else. .
