Despite the recent trends that suggest a new level of tolerance, as well as open scenes in more cosmopolitan cities (such as Tokyo and Osaka), Japanese gay men and lesbian women often conceal their sexuality, with many even marrying persons of the opposite sex. Japan is an awesome place with a rich culture, delicious food, lively nightlife, and stunning natural scenery! Harmony and tradition are highly valued here.

Like anywhere, being gay comes with issues but you won't face violence for just being gay in Japan. There are plenty of lesbian bars/clubs adjacent and associated with the popular gay bars in 2 chome and other gay areas. "Her" and other dating apps are common and well used and there are plenty of gay social functions, particularly in Tokyo. LGBT rights in Japan have seen progress in recent years, but they still lag behind other developed countries. While Japan does not have any explicit laws to protect the LGBT community from discrimination based on sexual orientation, the country has taken steps to promote understanding of the queer community.
