Before striking down the colonial-era law several organisations have expressed support for decriminalising homosexuality in India, and pushed for tolerance and social equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer people, and others with marginalised identities traditional to India. Being gay and Indian, navigating his early adulthood was challenging and at times confusing, partly because he didn't see people who shared that dual identity. The Hounslow resident says that even though he was supported by his family, that lack of visibility made it tough to find a safe space where he could be both Indian and gay.
