Even though it hasn’t been named explicitly, NYC appears to deal with the rampant HIV/AIDS crisis, which took place in the mid’s New York. Back then, HIV quickly spread through unprotected sex, particularly among homosexuals. So it shouldn’t be a shock to anyone that large numbers of gay men, having sex shows up frequently in the show.
