The film is a Trojan Horse. It lures you in with its soaring jets and preening male fighter jocks, but the real story is one about male vulnerability. I know that in terms of fandom and reputation, people always talk about Iceman/Maverick, but Goose/Maverick is pretty damn perfect, too, and so are Mav’s relationships with other pilots. It's about time we talked about Top Gun , not because the Tony Scott -directed movie turned 34 years old on May 16 or because we were, once upon a time, fully ready for Top Gun: Maverick to hit theaters this summer. No, the real reason we need to talk about Top Gun is because we need to discuss the impact of the powerful, loving relationship between Maverick Tom Cruise and Goose Anthony Edwards which highlights key themes in this otherwise flashy, hyper-masculine '80s action flick.

So there’s lots of talk of butts and Maverick calls his co-pilot Goose “honey”, but does that mean they’re all secretly gay and struggling to come to terms with their sexuality? The guy who wrote the script thinks it’s up to the people who watch the film. From a purely subjective place, the movie is great. Most of my conversations and references throughout June and July were about Top Gun or Maverick , and how much I thoroughly enjoyed the latter.
